SYNOPSIS

From the Geneon release:

Accompanied by crack shot Jigen, super-samurai Goemon, and sex bomb Fujiko, Lupin travels the world, pulling off fantastic heists and impossible escapes. Although he never manages to hang onto the loot, Lupin stays ahead of Interpol Inspector Zenigata, who chases the arch-thief with a fanaticism that rivals Wile E. Coyote's pursuit of the Road Runner.

Monkey Punch (the pen name of Katou Kazuhiko) is the author and artist of many of the Lupin III manga. The first manga, "Lupin Sansei" (pictured on top) began in the 1960's and ran for 14 tankoubon. The second, "Shin Lupin Sansei" (pictured second from top) began publication in the 1970's and released 16 tankoubon. Both are published in Japan by Futabasha and in America by Tokyopop. Not yet published in America are the rest of the manga, including: "Lupin Sansei Y" (started in the 1990's, 20 tankoubon long, with art by Yamakami Manatsuki, pictured third from top), "Lupin Sansei M" (started in 2000's, 8 tankoubon long, Monkey Punch used Miyama Yukio as the artist for this series, pictured fourth), and the newest series, "Lupin Sansei M Neo" which will release the first tankoubon in August 2009.

In addition to the many manga and anime Lupin has spawned, there was also a live-action Japanese movie called "Rupan sansei: Nenrikichan sakusen" (a.k.a. Lupin III: Strange Psychokinetic Strategy) from the 1970's. It's pictured second from the bottom.

The character of Lupin III is based loosely on the character Arsène Lupin created by Maurice Leblanc in many books (bottom picture). Lupin III is supposed to be the grandson of the famous Arsène Lupin. Lablanc's books were first published from 1907 - 1941. In a foil to the famous thief, the amazing Sherlock Holmes appeared in the novels several times, sometimes named "Herlock Sholmes" after Conan Doyle raised some legal objections. In the 1970's, another French author, Boileau-Narcejac, wrote another 5 books around the character.

Hayao Miyazaki &/or Isao Takahata, the two main artists behind the famous anime studio Studio Ghibli worked a bit on some of the Lupin III shows and also on the Cagliostro movie. Studio Ghibli is famous for some of the best animated movies in the world, including Mononoke Hime (a.k.a. Princess Mononoke), Howl no Ugoku Shiro (a.k.a.
