New challenger From the Geneon release: The main character, Ippo Makunouchi, is a 16 year-old, high school student. His mother is a single mother and is his only family. He helps with his mother's rental boat business early in the morning and late at night. He is very gentle, compassionate and shy. A gang of high school students, Uemura and his followers, is constantly bullying him.One day, Mamoru Takamura rescues Ippo in the middle of yet another "bullying session." The incident introduces Ippo to boxing and he tells Takamura that he wants to become a professional boxer.  Takamura gives Ippo an assignment to evaluate Ippo's potential to become a professional boxer. Jyoji Morikawa is the author of this still-running manga series. To date, 89 tankoubon have been released so far, # 90 is due out in December 2009.
